Hope and Renewal in Ojuando, Kenya
In the southwest of Kenya, near Lake Victoria and the Kanyaboli-Yala wetlands, young families live in a region rich in natural beauty — yet marked by deep poverty.
Where once the most beautiful birds and fish thrived, nature is slowly being depleted. Large-scale industrial farms are taking over more and more land, while local people are left without income or future prospects.
Poverty pushes many young people to leave for the cities, where jobs are scarce and the risk of exploitation is high. But not everyone leaves.
Maar niet iedereen vertrekt.

In 2014, the Elizabeth Youth Group was founded in the village of Ojuando A — a close-knit community of young people and young families, with a striking number of girls taking leading roles.
What began as a weekend activity grew into a strong local force focused on environmental restoration, education, and community building.
Together with farmers, schools, and the local parish, they run projects on sports, tree planting, goat farming, and sustainable tourism.
Central support comes from the St. Elizabeth Parish in Siaya, the main town in the region.
Equator’s Support
When Equator first came into contact with these young people, their dedication was immediately clear. Despite limited resources, they persevered in their work.
In 2024, Equator helped purchase their first training and community field — a place for gatherings, sports, tree planting, and new agricultural projects.
With more support, these young people can continue to build their dream: a region that does not empty out, but thrives.
