Who are we

Who We Are

Behind Equator lies a story of commitment, family, and a shared dream:
to connect young people worldwide through their own voices and images.

Background

In 2020, Equator grew into an independent non-profit organisation.

Back in 2018, father and son Chris and Roel Nollet noticed something essential was missing in the way young people around the world were connecting.
What if young people didn’t get to know each other through numbers or theories, but through their own stories?
What if they could speak for themselves — across borders?

That’s how the idea was born for a platform where young people — far apart, yet close at heart — could see, hear, and understand one another.

Not top-down.

But from young person to young person. From heart to heart.

A year later, in 2019, the first seed of Equator was planted.
Within the work of the non-profit Recht en Welzijn, and with the support of the European program Frame Voice Report, the project began to take shape.

Together with partners such as Wilde Ganzen, 11.11.11, The Redhorse Collective, schools, colleges, and organisations from the Global South, the idea became reality: young people film their own lives and share them with the world.

Today, Equator is driven by a dedicated and diverse board.
Many engaged members — with experience in education, media, youth work, international cooperation, and culture — safeguard our mission and growth.

They think strategically, offer support where needed, and keep us sharp and true to our values: authenticity, equality, and the power of youth.

What unites them?

A deep belief in the power of stories.
And the understanding that change begins when young people are given the space to speak for themselves.

Together — with our interns, volunteers, and partners — they form the beating heart of Equator.
